The Fuel originated one night on a balcony in Athens, Greece when two friends made a pact to start a new band. Arjen and Olly was at the end of a 3 week European tour with their respective bands at the time namely Hermano and Spoiler. The duo had shared the bill at numerous shows in the preceding years. The pair share a passion for high-energy, bluesy, soul injected rock music. The foundation for The Fuel was built on their mutual love for rock music.
After losing touch the pair reunited in Troy, Torino inevitably spending most of their time in a van. These road trips ignited the spark that was created many years ago. Early 2014 Arjen and Olly decided it was time to make their dream a reality. They decided to team up with long-time friend of the scene Jordi Langelaan an established and talented musician who owns his own recording studio called Barn In The Meadow. The trio played together for a couple of months, laying down the foundation for the band’s sound, but they felt like something was missing. The trio didn’t feel right and the band members felt like the vocal melodies needed to be expanded to create a bigger sound. Arjen had come across a vocalist singing some established blues songs on Soundcloud, a true diamond in the rough. The band asked Jelle to come to a studio, which was unknown territory for Jelle at the time, because he never experienced what it felt like singing into a microphone. The band was impressed with how easily Jelle adapted to the studio and evolved to become the essential ingredient in The Fuel’s recipe. The Fuel spent some time together creating and moulding their sound for the 5 track EP Add Fire to THE FUEL in July 2015. The EP has not been released yet.
The band consists of Jelle Klumpenaar (vocals), Arjen Rienks (Bass, Backing Vocals), Olly Smit (Guitars) and Jordi Langelaan (Drums, Backing Vocals).
I discovered the band when Jelle sent me a link to their new music video. I was blown away to say the least. The guitar intro is enough to give any rock music fan goosebumps. Jelle’s voice is raw, edgy, gritty with some bluesy soul thrown in for good measure. “Revolution” the band’s debut song has been on loop in my ears this whole week. The groove, guitars and bluesy sound is addictive. It is inspiring to see a new band produce a quality music video with high production value, because it creates a great first impression and fans buy into the band more easily.
All of us need to keep an eye on this band, because I can tell there is a lot more that this band can offer the rock music industry.
