Rick DeJesus was born and raised in a rough Philly neighbourhood where he saw family and friends doing drugs, landing up in jail, selling drugs, carrying guns etc. At that time Rick’s future seemed very bleak, but he was wise enough to know that he will pay the consequences if he carries on living his life the same way his family and friends did. In 2005 Rick was seeking an escape from his lifestyle and living conditions desperate to grasp onto anything to escape. On a dare he auditioned for a VH1 show that would take him to Los Angeles and in short succession Rick found himself appearing on the show “Strip Search” and he ended up in Vegas living in his car for three months doing anything to make ends meet. “Anything” included the “American Storm” show at the Riviera. The show allowed him to focus on the anthemic, modern rock that would become Adelitas Way signature sound. Rick’s personal dramas and experiences are portrayed through his performances.

First to join Adelitas Way was Chris lorio a high school senior who credits his parents for his love for rock music. His parents gave him a guitar when he was seven years old, turning him onto KISS, Ted Nugent and Van Halen. His style consists of a mix of 70’s rock with modern flair, he cites Slash and Randy Rhoads as his main influences. Trevor Stafforrd an in-demand tour and studio drummer was on Ozzfest with the band Shuvel at 17, he later moved to Las Vegas to be in the band full-time. He is a Huntington Beach, California native and is a fan of System of a Down, Primus and grunge. New York-bred bassist Derek Johnston and West Virgina native guitarist Keith Wallen who joined after the album was complete. They both add indie, hardcore and classic rock to the band’s sound. Rick and Trevor have more than  rock in common. Rick determined to rise above his chaotic existence in Philly graduated High School with a 3.7 GPA and went to college for three years, playing college baseball. Trevor earned a partial baseball scholarship, but ultimately like Rick he chose music. Trevor credits Rick for getting Adelitas Way shows with great artists like Chris Cornell, Hinder and Tantric due to Rick’s amazing work-ethic.

At the age of 18 Rick got his first taste of performing in front of a crowd when he decided to sneak into a bar for an acoustic night, singing in front of 60 people after which he received a standing ovation. Rick felt his talent being validated by the audience. Rick worked extremely hard to promote the band in his first year living in Vegas, he wore the same shirt every day and handed a demo to everyone he saw. Rick and the band sold 10,000 copies of  their self-titled records under their own steam “Move On” earning Number 1 song accolades in 2006 on Vegas rock station KOMP. They embarked on regional tours which further cemented their reputation as a powerful live act and portraying Rick as a charismatic frontman who wrote songs which exorcised the demons in his past. Rick is a very determined and ambitious man who refuses to let anyone stand in the way of his dreams.

When asked about the origin of the band’s name, Rick the consummate storyteller onstage and off is happy to relay the story. During a band road trip to LA they took a detour to San Diego and when Rick woke up after his nap the band was getting arrested in Mexico. Corrupt cops robbed the band, but Rick managed to hide a little cash in his socks. The band went to the first bar they saw in Tijuana to have a drink to try to calm their nerves and digest what happened. The bar was called the Adelita Bar. They noticed that there were a few nice, pretty young girls and realized the bar was basically a brothel. Rick started chatting to one of the girls interested to find out why she was doing this for a living. The band’s name emerged from the sad stories behind the Way they lived at the Adelita- Adelitas Way. Rick describes himself as an emotional songwriter and he often imagines living vicariously through other people. Rick writes songs about true situations.

The band started working on their debut album in late 2008. As 2009 approached, bassist Derek Johnston and guitarist Keith Wallen completing the original line-up. On the 17th of April 2009 the band released their first single “Invincible”. They broke into the mainstream after the song featured in many television shows. Invincible was the official theme song for WWE Superstars, the song featured in the Smackdown vs Raw 2010 video game, MTV as well as CSI Miami’s finale. Their debut album released on the 14th of July 2009. The band has toured with many popular rock bands namely Shinedown, Creed, Godsmack, Seether, Alter Bridge, Skillet, Halestorm and Three Days Grace to name a few. Less than 5 months after the band released their debut album was released Chris Iorio left the band due to personal reasons. The band replaced Iorio with guitarist Creighton Bibbs for the rest of the tour. On the 23rd of February 2010 their second single “The Last Stand”  was released. Their song “Scream” appeared on the soundtrack for the film Saw 3D in October 2010.

On the 31st of January 2011, the band revealed their sophomore album Home School Valedictorian. After the release date was delyayed the album was released on the 7th of June 2011. Before the album was released Robert Zakaryan was recruited as the band’s new lead guitarist. “Sick” the first single released off of their second album on the 11th of March 2011, reached #1 on Active Rock Radio, the second single “The Collapse” followed and reached #2 on Active Rock Radio. On the 16th of February 2012 “Criticize” was announced as the third single of their second album and reached #1 on the Active Rock Radio. “Alive” was the fourth single released from the album on the 13th of August 2012, the song reached #6 on the U.S active Rock chart in spring of 2013.

The writing process for the band’s third album started at the end of 2012 ad continued through to July 2013. On the 7th of May 2013 Keith Wallen revealed through his Facebook page that he would be leaving the band to pursue his own personal goals. The band’s next single is expected in January 2014, with the new album anticipated to drop around April 2014 through Virgin Records/CMG.

I decided to feature Adelitas Way as band of the month, because they worked hard to reach their goals. Their music is edgy, energetic and Rick DeJesus is a great frontman to lead such a diverse group of musicians. I started taking notice of the band due to the fact that they have toured with some of my favourite bands. A talented band that have achieved much in the short span of time since they released their debut album. My advice would be to watch this space, because I’m sure this is not the last time you will hear of Adelitas Way.

I was awestruck when I saw that 30 Seconds To Mars released the official video for Do or Die, it took me by complete surprise. I can honestly say that I felt quite emotional when I watched the video, because I can identify with every member of The Echelon. I could share their pain and their joy. The band has really cultivated and nurtured a truly unique culture which would be difficult to recreate for any other band. The Echelon is a special breed of family that are tied by a unique bond that renders distance irrelevant. The video is the band’s way of saying thank you to their extended family for their support and what a treat it is (especially seeing a half-naked Jared Leto running through the woods 😉 ) No one can edit a video quite like Bartholomew Cubbins and his team. Its a must-see for everyone who loves their music and all that they stand for. Long live The Echelon!

I leave you with a few screenshots of the video.

Lauren K

Band of the Month – Theory of a Deadman

Theory of a Deadman originated in Canada, more specifically in Vancouver. The band was formed in 2001. The band’s name originated from a song title with the same name that was featured on their debut album, the song was later renamed “The Last Song“.

The lead singer/guitarist for the band Tyler Connolly slipped a copy of the band’s demo to Chad Kroeger at a post-concert party. Chad Kroeger obviously saw some potential in the band as they were the first act that got signed to Chad Kroeger’s record label 604 Records.  On the band’s demo was the song which would later become the “Invisible Man”. The band’s self-titled debut album was released on the 17th of September 2002. Their music stayed within the grunge genre, but delivered powerful songs like “Make Up Your Mind” and “Nothing Could Come Between Us” both of which was released as singles.

On the 29th of March 2005 the band released their second album “Gasoline”, slowly moving away from their grunge sound by incorporating more pop-and country influence into their music. Four singles from “Gasoline” landed onto the Mainstream Rock Chart and the album cracked the Top 60 of the Billboard album chart. After the release of the album the band toured with Shinedown and No Address. Theory of a Deadman went on a promotional tour in the same year which was headlined by Breaking Benjamin and The Exies.

The band performed the theme song to World Wrestling Entertainment’s No Way Out’s pay-per-view in 2006 a cover version of “Deadly Game” from the WWE Anthology album. The song was released on WWE Wreckless Intent album. They did a cover of “No Chance In Hell” which is Vince McMahon‘s theme song, the song was released on WWE The Music Vol. 8. on the 25th of March 2008. The band performed the theme song for the 24th Annual WWE Summerslam.

On the 1st of April 2008 Theory of a Deadman released their third studio album Scars & Souvenirs which delivered 8 singles namely “So Happy”, “By The Way”, “Little Smirk“, “Bad Girlfriend”, “All or Nothing”, “Hate My Life”, “Not Meant to Be” and “Wait for Me”. “By The Way” features backing vocals from Daughtry band members Chris Daughtry and Robin Diaz. With this album the band developed their own unique sound a little more with daring lyrics and flashier sound.

Theory of a Deadman attended the Juno Awards in Calgary, Alberta after taking part in a promotional tour across Canada called Journey To The Junos. Theory of a Deadman performed in the 96th Grey Cup halftime show on the 23rd of November 2008. Hinder and Theory of a Deadman supported Mötley Crüe during the fall 2008 /winter 2009 tour as well as Crüe Fest 2.

On the 9th of April 2009 Scars and Souvenirs was certified Gold by the RIAA with 500, 000 copies sold in the US alone.

In late 2010 the band announced that they were busy recording their fourth studio album which was scheduled for a mid-2011 release date. Tyler Connolly later confirmed that the album titled “The Truth Is… would be released on the 12th of July 2011. The first single, “Lowlife” was released on the 17th of May 2011. Musically not too much has changed on their fourth album, but the band had an epiphany when it came to songwriting. The band had more confidence and Tyler was willing to be more open and honest about his feelings than ever before. Tyler thought it would be fun to write a song about a Lowlife, because their fans aren’t people wearing fancy clothing or driving around in the latest cars. Their fans are regular people who like to have a good time and listening to rock music.

In 2011 Theory of a Deadman co-headlined the second annual Carnival of Madness tour with Alter Bridge. The supporting bands were Black Stone Cherry, Adelitas Way and Emphatic.

The band contributed a song called “Head Above Water” to the Transformers:Dark of the Moon which was released on the 14th of June 2011. The band’s record label Roadrunner Records made a free download of the song “Drag Me To Hell”  available on their website on the 16th of June 2011.

The band consists of Tyler Connolly [Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar], David Brenner [Rhythm Guitar], Dean Back [Bass], Joey Dandeneau [Drums].

I’m a fan of Theory of a Deadman’s music, because they are realistic about their goals. They don’t expect to change the world with their music, they just want their fans to love, laugh, cry and share their passion for music along with them. The band compose enjoyable, catchy and honest songs/lyrics which is refreshingly different in today’s music landscape.

Thirty Seconds To Mars have unleashed the lyric video for a new song from their upcoming album called “Conquistador”. The guitars on the track is really impressive and Jared’s voice gives me the chills while Shannon provides the base for the track with his energetic drum beats. This song has really made me even more excited for Love+Lust+Faith & Dreams which will be released on the 21st of May 2013.

The Echelon have already trended #CONQUISTADOR worldwide on Twitter today, so I’m obviously not the only one who is excited! 😀

Conquistadors were soldiers, explorers and adventurers at the service of the Spanish Empire and the Portugese Empire. They colonized much of the world for Spain and Portugal in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.

Musician of the Week – Cello Player Perttu Kivilaakso

From the very first time that I was exposed to Apocalyptica’s music, Perttu has fascinated me the most. At first it was for obvious reasons (:D), but he is an extremely talented musician.

The musical prodigy Perttu Päivö Kullervo Kivilaakso was born on the 11th of May 1978 in Helsinki, Finland. Like fellow band members Eicca Toppinen and Paavo Lötjönen he attended Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He started playing the cello when he was only 5 years old after witnessing his father Juhani Kivilaakso perform at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Perttu joined Apocalyptica in 1994 when he was only 16. When the band started their professional career Perttu decided to concentrate on his studies. He won third place in the Paulo Cello Competition in 1996, and joined the Helsinki Philarmonic Orchestra. Perttu attained a  lifetime chair in the Helsinki Philharmonic orchestra,  where his father, Juhani,is also a cellist. He played alongside his father and many other talented musicians. In 1999 Perttu rejoined the band when they were making preparations to record for the album “Cult” and he replaced Antero Manninen who left the band. He was on indefinite leave while he was touring with Apocalyptica,  but in 2007 he made the decision to leave the Helsinki Philarmonic Orchestra and to concentrate on achieving international success with Apocalyptica.

Perttu was part of the band line-up when their third album “Cult” was released in 2000.

Perttu listened to opera since childhood and he is a true aficionado. His favourite composer is G. Verdi and favourite opera is Il Trovatore.
He loves metal (Amon Amarth, Judas Priest, Immortal, Testament, Slayer, Metallica, Napalm Death, Rammstein). He learned to appreciate rock (U2, Muse), blues (Aretha Franklin) and all sorts of music. Perttu likes to read a lot and his favourite author is JRR Tolkien, but he also likes to read books written by Stephen King and H.Hesse. Perttu’s other hobbies consist of watching horror movies and playing video games. Perttu is a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and he has had 3 tattoos done to prove it. He has Aragorn’s sword tattooed on his left arm, Witch king of Angmar on his right shoulder, Aragorn and Arwen’s kissing scene on his left side. Perttu has composed music for the video game Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne, a few documentaries and he has done some original compositions for Apocalyptica including “Conclusion”, “Farewell” and “Beautiful”.

I find Perttu inspiring because he has dedicated his entire life to perfecting his craft. He has never denied an opportunity where he could gain more knowledge and experience to improve his skills. He has stopped at nothing to follow his dream and I think that is something that few people can attest to.

Front(wo)man of the Week – Hayley Williams

Hayley Nichole Williams was born on the 27th of December 1988 and she is currently best known as the lead singer of American rock band Paramore.

After her parents divorced in 2002 at the age of 13, Hayley moved from her hometown, Meridian, Mississippi to Franklin, Tennessee. Before she was discovered Hayley was frequently bullied as a teenager and she was very timid growing up. She met band members Josh and Zac Farro in her new school. While still attending school Hayley tried out for a local funk cover band The Factory where she met Jeremy Davis.

In 2003 Hayley Williams was discovered by managers Dave Steunebrink and Richard Williams. They signed Hayley who was 14 years old at the time to a two year production deal. Hayley was introduced to Atlantic Records A&R Tom Storms by  Richard Williams’ attorneys Jim Zumwalt and Kent Marcus and eventually was signed to the label by Jason Flom. The label’s original plan was to turn Hayley into a solo pop artist, but she rejected this by saying that she wanted to be part of a band and play alternative rock music.

Atlantic decided to go along with Hayley’s wishes and Paramore was born as a result. The band consisted of Josh Farro (lead guitar/backing vocals) , Zac Farro(drums) and Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) at the time. For the sake of the image of the band it was decided that it would be better to have their music released through a cooler niche label called “Fueled by Ramen”. Paramore’s debut album was released in 2005 when Hayley was just 16 years old.

In 2007 Hayley appeared in the music video for New Found Glory’s “Kiss Me”. Hayley won Kerrang!’s 2008 poll for “Sexiest Female” and again in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Hayley wrote and recorded the song “Teenagers” which appears on the soundtrack for the movie “Jennifer’s Body”. In 2010 Hayley appeared on alternative rapper B.o.B’s debut album “B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray“. The single “Airplanes” was hugely successful and peaked in the Top 10 in 19 countries including number 1 in the UK and New Zealand.

In 2006 Paramore started touring outside of the United States for the first time, which included a headlining tour in the UK supporting The Blackout on the Give It A Name Festival in Europe.

The band has released three studio albums All We Know Is Falling, Riot! and Brand New Eyes as well as 2 live albums and 3 EPs. In June 2009 Taylor York was added as an official member, even though he was playing as a touring member with the band since 2007.

In December 2010 two of the founding members (Josh and Zac Farro) of the band left. It was announced on Paramore’s website by Hayley. Josh posted a controversial blog post confirming their departure.

Paramore almost ended entirely, but it took a while for the band to get used to the new lineup and they decided to continue playing music. The band went on a mini tour of South America just to ease back into playing live and getting used to the new lineup.

The band wrapped the recording of their fourth album which is self-titled “Paramore” on the 1st of November 2012. The album will be released on the 9th of April 2013. Their first single called ” Now” was released on the 22nd of January 2013. Paramore will start touring in the early spring after the album comes out. The band is still looking for a drummer, but as far as the touring goes Paramore’s crew is pretty permanent.

The music video for the latest single from Paramore “Now”. I love the message behind the video and the video itself is captivating.

Hayley’s voice is crisp, clear and angelic, but the contrast her voice creates when combined with alternative rock music is fantastic! I can see why the music industry wanted to turn her into a solo pop artist, but I’m so glad she stood her ground.
